- Talk to an older member of your family, older than 50, and not a parent, maybe at Thanksgiving dinner. Get the person talking. You should do more listening than talking. Take abundant notes, but don't slow down or stop the conversation for this. Let the person talk; immediately afterward, review your notes, and go back to the person if you have questions. (You might even choose to record the conversation.)
Your notes will be checked as a homework assignment on Friday, December 2nd. - Write the story that the person tells you. Make it engaging. Don't just list events; develop the setting, and develop characters, with dialogue, actions, thoughts/feelings, etc. Give it a title when you're finished.
- You must write in first-person, meaning you need to put yourself in your subject’s shoes and write from her/his perspective (using “I”). Include a one-sentence note after the essay indicating the relationship between you and the subject.
